The Three Contenders, Briefly
Purina FortiFlora is built on a single organism, Enterococcus faecium strain SF68, and is a common first-line recommendation for acute diarrhea and gastrointestinal support during antibiotic courses. Its strength is a well-characterized single strain; its limitation is narrow scope.
Nutramax Proviable-DC takes the opposite approach — a multi-strain probiotic delivering seven bacterial strains at roughly 5 billion CFU in a sprinkle capsule. Nutramax is the research-oriented manufacturer behind the veterinary joint standards Cosequin and Dasuquin, and Proviable is a mainstay for antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
Postbiotic formulas deliver inanimate (heat-killed or lysed) microorganisms and their components rather than live cultures. The ISAPP 2021 consensus defines a postbiotic as “a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host” (Salminen et al., 2021). Because no organism must survive, the category avoids the stability problems that constrain live probiotics and is inherently safer for immunocompromised patients.
Criterion 1: Published Canine Clinical Trials
This criterion asks the simplest and most important question: has the approach been tested in peer-reviewed trials in dogs? FortiFlora’s SF68 strain is among the better-studied probiotic organisms, with a substantial body of canine and livestock research supporting its use in acute GI disturbance — this is why it’s a veterinary staple. Proviable’s constituent strains likewise carry gastrointestinal evidence. Both earn a Partial here: the evidence is real but concentrated in a single system (the gut), and much of the broader probiotic literature a manufacturer might cite is extrapolated from human or farm-animal studies rather than conducted in dogs.
The postbiotic category is the only one of the three with controlled canine trials spanning multiple outcomes. A 2025 double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial of a canine oral-health postbiotic found a 27% reduction in volatile sulfur compounds (the gases responsible for bad breath) versus placebo over 14 days (Sordillo et al., 2025). A second 2025 double-blind RCT found an indole-rich postbiotic reduced scratching by 20% from baseline and improved skin and coat quality in dogs (Sordillo et al., 2025). A 57-day placebo-controlled trial of a heat-treated Lactiplantibacillus plantarum postbiotic reduced dental plaque accumulation (Florit-Ruiz et al., 2025), and a controlled trial in senior dogs found a prebiotic-plus-postbiotic combination improved immune-cell ratios (Wambacq et al., 2024). We score the postbiotic category Meets — with the honest caveat that the field is young and a 2025 systematic review found pooled analyses aren’t yet statistically significant for some fecal parameters (Bonel-Ayuso et al., 2025).
Criterion 2: Postbiotic Stability
This is the criterion that separates the categories most cleanly. FortiFlora and Proviable are live-organism products, which means their labeled CFU count is a moving target. Live bacteria die during storage and transit, which is why the probiotic industry routinely overfills capsules by 1.5 to 4 times the labeled count to compensate for expected die-off (ISAPP, 2021). The JAVMA review of probiotics noted that live-organism products yield “actual microorganism concentrations that range from 0.008% to 215% of the labeled concentrations” (Jugan et al., 2017), and the landmark label-accuracy analysis found only 27% of veterinary probiotics met their label claims (Weese & Martin, 2011). Both products therefore score Doesn’t meet on inherent stability — not because they’re poorly made, but because no live product can guarantee a consistent viable dose from factory to bowl.
Postbiotics are inanimate, so there is no viable count to degrade, no refrigeration chain to maintain, and no viability assay to fail. Periodontal disease affects the majority of dogs by age three, yet gut-focused probiotics aren’t designed or studied for the mouth. Neither FortiFlora nor Proviable carries controlled canine evidence for oral-health markers such as volatile sulfur compounds, plaque, or gingival indices — both score Doesn’t meet. The postbiotic category is the only one of the three with controlled canine oral-health data. The halitosis trial cited above (27% VSC reduction, p=0.004) and the 57-day plaque trial (a significant reduction in plaque accumulation with a heat-treated L. plantarum postbiotic) are direct, dog-specific oral outcomes (Sordillo et al., 2025; Florit-Ruiz et al., 2025). Because a postbiotic doesn’t need to colonize to act — its inactivated cell components and metabolites interact directly with the oral environment — it sidesteps the colonization problem entirely. The category scores Meets.
Criterion 4: Multi-System Formulation
FortiFlora and Proviable are, by design, gastrointestinal products. Neither is formulated or evidenced for oral, immune, dermatologic, or joint outcomes, so both score Doesn’t meet on multi-system breadth. This is appropriate for their intended use — a focused product for a focused indication — but it means an owner seeking a single product to support gut, oral, immune, and skin health together won’t find it in either.

Criterion 5: Full Dose Transparency
FortiFlora discloses its single strain and a guaranteed CFU count; Proviable discloses its seven strains and CFU. On the narrow question of “are the organisms named,” both do reasonably well. But live-probiotic labels disclose a viable count at manufacture, not a verified count at consumption, and the broader literature shows how often those numbers diverge from reality (Weese & Martin, 2011). We score both Partial: organisms are named, but the disclosed quantity is inherently a manufacture-time estimate rather than a consumption-time guarantee, and neither product is positioned around full per-ingredient milligram disclosure with routine third-party verification.
