The canine supplement market is projected to exceed four billion dollars within a few years, and it’s almost entirely self-policed. Unlike drugs, supplements don’t require pre-market proof of efficacy; a product can be sold on the strength of its marketing long before anyone asks whether it works in dogs. For an owner — and, frankly, for a clinician advising one — the result is a wall of competing claims that are difficult to weigh. This article is our answer to that problem: a five-point evidence framework that reduces any supplement to five answerable questions. It’s the pillar article to which our other comparisons refer.

Why a Framework?

The core problem is that supplement claims aren’t all backed by the same kind of evidence. A strain studied in a human trial isn’t the same as a formula tested in dogs; a guaranteed count at manufacture isn’t the same as a verified dose at consumption; a product with twelve ingredients isn’t the same as a product with evidence behind each one. The evidence hierarchy is well established in veterinary medicine (Jugan et al., 2017), and it tells us that controlled trials in the target species outrank extrapolation, mechanism, and marketing. The five criteria below operationalize that hierarchy into a checklist an owner can actually use.

Criterion 1: Published Canine Clinical Trials

What it asks: has the approach been tested in peer-reviewed, controlled trials in dogs — not extrapolated from human or livestock data? The canine microbiome is a distinct ecosystem, and responses to supplementation are highly individualized; a 2021 longitudinal survey in healthy dogs found that responses to the same probiotic varied widely and that microbiome diversity wasn’t significantly altered after two weeks (Manson-Smith et al., 2021). Species-specific trial data therefore matters. How to check: look for randomized, placebo-controlled trials reporting outcomes in dogs, indexed in PubMed. Criterion 2: Postbiotic Stability

What it asks: does the active dose survive manufacturing, storage, and gastrointestinal transit? Live probiotics are inherently unstable: counts decay on the shelf, the industry overfills by 1.5–4× to compensate, and independent analyses have found actual concentrations ranging from a fraction of a percent to well above label claims (Jugan et al., 2017; Weese & Martin, 2011). What it asks: does the product address the oral microbiome — gingival, periodontal, and halitosis outcomes — or only the gut? Periodontal disease is the most prevalent clinical condition in adult dogs, commonly cited as affecting roughly 80% of dogs by age three, and the mouth continuously seeds the gut. Yet gut-focused probiotics carry no controlled canine evidence for oral outcomes. A postbiotic can act on the oral biofilm directly, without the colonization step that defeats live organisms; controlled canine trials now document reductions in volatile sulfur compounds and dental plaque (Sordillo et al., 2025; Florit-Ruiz et al., 2025). Criterion 4: Multi-System Formulation

What it asks: is the product evidenced for more than one body system — gut, oral, immune, joint, skin — rather than a single target? A long ingredient list isn’t the same as multi-system evidence; what matters is controlled data behind each system claimed. The postbiotic category’s canine trials now span gut, oral, immune, and skin outcomes (Sordillo et al., 2025; Florit-Ruiz et al., 2025; Wambacq et al., 2024), and a 2025 systematic review identified 13 in vivo canine studies across systems (Bonel-Ayuso et al., 2025). How to check: count the body systems with controlled canine evidence, not the number of ingredients on the label.

Criterion 5: Full Dose Transparency

What it asks: is every active ingredient disclosed by amount, on a reliable basis, and independently verified? Listing strains and a total CFU is a first step, not the finish line. Full transparency means each ingredient disclosed by milligram, dose stated as a stable fixed mass rather than a decaying viable count, and routine third-party verification whose scope is published. Label accuracy is a documented industry-wide weakness (Weese & Martin, 2011), and “third-party tested” and quality seals, while valuable, don’t by themselves verify efficacy or full per-ingredient disclosure. At the time of writing, that combination isn’t found among the mainstream incumbents scored above. Are you saying mainstream probiotics are bad products?

No. FortiFlora and Proviable, for example, are well-built products with genuine gastrointestinal roles, and a clinician would recommend them for the right indication. Is the postbiotic evidence proven?

It is strong and emerging, not yet a consensus guideline.
